The Orozco family, originally from Tamaulipas, Mexico, moved to Mississippi to have a better standard of living. But soon after they moved, their lives were changed forever. First, their older daughter, Esther, began experiencing headaches and vomiting. Doctors told her family it was a throat infection.
After two months under medication, Esther began loosing her balance and her sight deteriorated. An MRI scan at the local hospital revealed that Esther had a benign brain tumor. Esther had to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. She was then referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for treatment, where she underwent six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy.
Soon after Esther’s treatment had ended, her parents had to endure another tragedy. Amos, Esther’s younger brother, began experiencing the same symptoms as his sister.
Doctors soon determined that Amos had a tumor of the brain called meduloblastoma. Amos was also referred to St. Jude for his treatment after having surgery to remove the mass. At St. Jude, Amos received radiation and chemotherapy. His parents are currently waiting for his immune system to get stronger so they can go home. But Amos and his family will need to continue coming to St. Jude for his treatments and checkups.
“We will forever be thankful to St. Jude for all things they have done for us,” said Pedro, Esther & Amos father. “They saved the lives of my two children.”
